What should I look for in a newborn photographer?
The most important thing is for you to look through their newborn portfolio. The portraits should be classic and timeless in nature. The newborn should be the focus of the portraits and look relaxed and peaceful. You may also want to ask your friends and relatives if they recommend one local photographer over another. Price is always at the forefront of any consumer's mind, but you have to remember that you get what you pay for. Going with the cheaper photographer is not a good way to determine who should take your newborn portraits. The photographer will be handling, posing, and soothing your baby. For those reasons make sure you are working with someone who knows how to appropriately pose newborns, considers the safety of your baby first, and provides you with a great experience and a beautiful final product. When shopping around make sure that the quoted prices include digital portraits with print release, not just the cost of the session itself. Keep in mind that not all photographers offer digital collections. Some only sell prints and products, which means you will never be able to print your portraits yourself or share them online as you wish. Also be weary of packages that promise a very large number of portraits as they will most likely be repetitive. Quality over quantity is what truly matters. For convenience, it is also best if the photographer provides the props to you since they can be very expensive and difficult to find. It doesn't make much sense for you to spend money on props that you will use only once.
Do you travel to people's homes for newborn sessions?
No, and I do not recommend in-home newborn photography. In-studio newborn photography will give you the highest quality portraits possible because the conditions are consistent. What you see in my portfolio is what you should expect. I also have too much equipment and props to travel with.
I am worried about driving with my newborn. Should I be?
As much as I would like for you to keep your newborn awake on your way to my studio, chances are your newborn will sleep through the entire drive here. Newborns are typically very easy to travel with. The parents that I work with always seem happy that they had a good reason to get out of their home for a first outing with their newborn. My studio is comfortable and you will be able to relax while watching me work.
What happens if my newborn refuses to sleep?
We will try as best as we can to get your newborn to sleep. If all fails but your newborn is content I will take some awake shots. Another option for parents who live close by is to re-schedule the newborn session, however the need for this is very rare especially if you followed the preparation guidelines. Please note that the photographer is not responsible if your newborn is uncooperative. Reshoots are granted at the photographer's discretion.
What if my newborn pees or poops on the props or the photographer?
Like they say poop happens, let's pick it up and move on! All props used are washable and the equipment is sanitized after each newborn session.
